Buying fish online and Setting up a Salt Water Fish Tank

Before you buy saltwater fish online, there are a few things you should check out about the site before you bring the animals home.  Coral Reef Farm has a guarantee regarding all the fish we sell—if it does not arrive in good condition, you’ll get your money back.  Not all saltwater fish providers offer this guarantee.

However, care is a two way street.  We will house all of our fish, coral, live rock, and invertebrates, in a controlled and relaxing environment, but you need to do the same.  Before you buy saltwater fish, you need to have your saltwater aquarium up and running.  You should not store the fish in a small, poorly-salinated tank while you prepare the main tank.  The fish should be introduced to their new environment as soon as they arrive.

This means doing your aquascaping beforehand—setting corral, live rock, plant life, and other things you want to add to the environment.  You should also set lighting for the coral and fish that will be coming into the tank beforehand.  At the same time, no amount of preparation will suffice if the saltwater fish you buy online have been poorly treated.

At Coral Reef Farm, we make sure this is never the case.  This is true when we bring in new marine life, how they are raised, and during transport to you.  Some fish are very sensitive to going from tank to tank, while others make the transition more seamlessly.  Whatever the case, the fish are treated with care and you can be certain the fish will live long healthy lives.

A saltwater aquarium is an ongoing process.  A lot is taken care of during set-up, but maintenance is also key to the health of your tank’s animal life.  You must test the water to ensure proper salinity and other factors, in addition to maintaining the tank’s light source.

If you are bringing a new fish into an existing saltwater aquarium, you must make certain that the fish is compatible with other fish already living in the aquarium.  It isn’t enough that the new fish become acclimated to its new environment, everything already in the tank needs to be acclimated to the new fish.  A lack of compatibility can lead to both short and long term health issues for fish and invertebrates.  If you are unsure about compatibility issues with any fish, we’ll be happy to answer any questions.
