Two popular live rock varieties come from Tonga and the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to buy aquacultured Caribbean live rock or to buy Tonga live rock. This is not true with Coral Reef Farm. Tonga and the Caribbean are two of our cultured rock specialties.
Tonga live rock is some of the most expressive live rock available. Unlike some of the more traditional rock formations with holes and crevices, when you buy Tonga live rock you get something that looks like a snake—with wide circular holes that fish can swim through. Like other live rock, it contains algae that will feed on waste products and clean the aquarium.
Other Tonga live rock can look like a series of claws—it’s quite striking. It can add an element of color and texture to any aquarium habitat. The rock contains hues of pink, purple, red, and green. All in all, it is some of the most colorful rock available—even more colorful than some forms of corral. This is the main reason that Tonga live rock is a focal point of Coral Reef Farm’s cured live rock collection.
Unlike corral, which needs to be grown in a habitat, cured live rock is taken from the ocean wild and then cured in a tank so it is stripped of harmful bacteria. However, just because it was not grown whole on the farm, this doesn’t mean the rock will be the size of slim coral frags. At Coral Reef Farms you can buy Tonga live rock that’s as big as a whole piece of corral. Of course, smaller pieces are available if that is what you require. We pride ourselves on the quality and variety of our cured Tonga live rock that can be placed in your aquarium habitat as soon as it arrives.
Caribbean live rock is like the opposite of Tonga live rock. Instead of Medusa-like cords of rock, Caribbean live rock comes as a large round rock formation. However, it is highly porous and has many openings where fish and the inverts can hide. One of the great things about putting both Tonga live rock and Caribbean live rock in your aquarium is that each rock is entirely unique. No two saltwater aquariums will be the same. Both live rock and coral can be used for reef-only aquariums or for fish aquariums as well.
Even a reef-only aquarium will have some form of life as live rock is teaming with algae, sponges, tunicates, and other forms of life. Fish can benefit by swimming in a live rock environment as they can feed on different forms of algae, and some bacteria and algae helps keep the tank clean. In addition, because Caribbean live rock is porous it is light meaning is easier to move around for aquascaping and doesn’t require many gallons of water. |
